Step 2 - The Sand
Use the same brush, but rinse in thinner and clean. Then first apply with horizontal strokes a thin mix of yellow ochre and white below the light red; lay-in above, changing to vertical strokes to fill in the region (2a).
Lighten where the two colors meet with a whiter mix of the yellow (2b). Then blend (2c).
