Step 1 - The Sky

Lay out yellow ochre, light red, cobalt blue and white. Look at your first photo and observe the increasing gradation of light and tone from top to horizon.

Use the 1” flat brush and with a thin mix of blue and white, lay from the top down with vertical and angled strokes to about third of the way down. Increase the lightness or value by adding more white. Stay loose (1a).

From about a third up from the bottom, lay in a thin blend of light red and white and work it towards the blue above. Use the same vertical oblique strokes. Notice the match with the reference photo in 1b is about 50% right! A photo, for field reference color, is never ALL what the artist wants it to be. If you're not sure, walk outside and look for yourself at the gradation in the sky ‘shade’. The detail in 1c shows the gradation from sky above to horizon.
